Citizen Men’s JY0000-53E Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch

Review

Before I get into the details, in a nutshell, if you like cool watches with quality performance and handsome looks: BUY THE WATCH.

This is a striking timepiece, both in functionality and physical appearance. Despite its beauty and overall appeal, be warned that it is not for the simple minded, or for those who like a clean, very basic dial, like a straightforward analog day/date for example. Frankly, the watch is quite complex and is capable of a myriad of functions. This may intimidate some people, but if you like the “does everything” watch, this is the one for you. FYI, the photo makes the dial look black, but it is actually not black; it is a very dark brown which becomes evident when you step into bright sunlight. A quick tour around the watch: the bi-directional rotating slide rule bezel is unique in that it possesses 12 little evenly spaced stainless steel raised knobs or studs on the side of the bezel. This makes turning the bezel much easier than normal. Pretty cool i thought. I haven’t seen another watch with those studs, but maybe one exists somewhere, who knows. The bracelet is very pleasing in my opinion. Multi link style with more individual pieces than your average bracelet. Looks nice. The luminescence is very bright and responsive to almost any form of light. As soon as you step into even a slightly dark room from the bright outdoors, the markers are starting to glow, and in a pitch black setting they are “screaming” green after adequate exposure to light. I also like the orange light for the digital display windows. FYI the watch is so complex that the instruction manual is 115 pages long. Basically, if you lose the manual you are screwed because it is essential for operating the watch to its full potential. Even setting the time was brain racking because it doesn’t operate like a tradional analog watch where the hour and minute hands are moved via the crown being pulled out and wound. Instead, you need to select your timezone on the digital display and press some of the function pushers and THEN the hands are automatically moved for you. Very cool, but it took me a while to figure out. Don’t get confused or upset if you can’t select the exact city you live in for your particular time zone. Just pick one of the cities closest to you that the watch provides. I strongly advise inserting the included instructional CD-ROM into your desktop and following along; it was very helpful. This watch is totally solar powered, and even gets charged from indoor light. The radio controlled function via the US Atomic Clock in Ft. Collins, Colorado is big time bragging rights if you ask me. Extremely high tech and keeps the watch 100% accurate. I stayed up one night just to see the 2 a.m. radio transmission from Colorado contact the watch and set it into action. I was impressed. World time in 43 cities is also stunning. This watch has way too many functions for me to list in a review, but essentially this is a great timepiece for a person who travels in and out of time zones frequently, or who needs unit conversions, etc., or just someone who appreciates a very competent watch with high funtionality, great craftsmanship, and cutting edge technology. I only wish that Citizen would have used sapphire crystal instead of mineral crystal. I still give it a five though. I hate scratched crystals on my watches, so perhaps after a year I will give the watch four stars instead! Amazing watch despite not having sapphire. What are you waiting for? GET IT DUDE!!!

Citizen Men’s Eco-Drive Canvas Watch #BM6400-00E

April 13, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Citizen

Review

Would just like to give my basic thoughts on this watch. I just received today and overall, think it’s a great watch. I traded down, I suppose, from the Citizen Skyhawk black eagle. Which has an unforgiving rubber wristband. But this is about the Citizen Eco-Drive Canvas Watch #BM6400-00E.

First off, I love the visibility. The contrast of white on black with the large numbers make this watch very easy to read. The numbers are just a bit too large for my liking, but I knew that going into it and it’s something that doesn’t bother me too much. The ease of reading the watch at first glance more than makes up for the large numbers. The case is very solid and seems durable. It just has that quality feel without being too heavy. Another plus is the flat crystal. Much better than a convex crystal which are prone to glare. Even though I’m no diver, I really like the fact this watch is 200 meter water resistant and I love the screw down crown. This watch is outstanding at night. The numbers are very bright and easy to read. The canvas band is not as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. I have ordered a leather band and will probably get one of those Martac straps I’ve seen in many Citizen watch pictures. And of course the eco-drive is a huge plus. I doubt I will never own another watch other than a Citizen eco-drive.

I’m not going to be as picky as to try measuring the movement of the second hand and how they line up with the minutes. That’s just not a concern of mine and it seems to work great in that regard. I only have a couple of complaints that, had I known, I may have considered a different watch.

First the crystal is raised slightly above the bezel. I anticipate some dings and scratches on the crystal from bumping into things. Second, after wearing the watch for nearly a day now, the hands seem too small for the numbers. I would have preferred this watch to have slightly larger hands (hour, minute and second). I think it would complement the watch much better.

My only other complaint is the date. Unlike another review I read, I do not think the date is easier to read ‘in person’. In fact, I struggle a bit to read the date. This is a huge problem indoors or in low light because the date is sunken down considerably and the face casts a shadow making it that much more difficult to read. Design-wise, I would have preferred the entire ‘3′ spot being taken up by a slightly larger date. The date is the only reason I did not give this watch 5 stars.

For my tastes, I would like to see the BM8180-03E and this watch (BM6400-00E) merge into a style that has the case diameter and band width of the BM6400-00E and the face of the BM8180-03E. I did not purchase the BM8180-03E because I prefer a wider band and a slightly larger case diameter.

Feature

  • Ecologically friendly, light powered eco-drive Japanese-quartz movement; charges in natural sunlight or indoor light
  • Black durable nylon strap
  • Date calendar feature

Citizen Men’s Eco-Drive Black Ion-Plated Skyhawk Watch #JR3155-54E

March 11, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Citizen

Review

I’ve had this watch for about 3 months. I bought it at a wholesale club for about what Amazon is selling it for now.

The watch has a nice heft. It was a little difficult to set but has run flawlessly since. The watch band tends to pull hairs but removing a link or two cures that problem.

My only suggestion for improvement would be some type of backlighting for the watch face or at least the digital display. The digital display is difficult to see since the LCD is somewhat gray on a black background.

All in all, I’m glad I bought this watch. I have two other Citizens, one other an Eco-Drive, and I’ve been very pleased with their performance.
